My boss says," Raise my revenue 25% in six months!"

I recently got an e-mail from someone with a plaintive question. He just got a new job as the Internet marketing person at his firm. The boss waltzed in and demanded that he raise revenue 25% in six months. His question to me, "How?" How, indeed. It's rare that I try to give blanket advice to anyone in a situation that I don't understand, but after thinking about it a few minutes, I believed that I knew what to tell him. It might be good advice if you are in that situation with your boss, too.

Any of dozens of ideas might be the right ones. It's not easy to say without spending a lot of time understanding your situation. If you can afford a consulting engagement that looks at your situation, I'd recommend that, but honestly, expecting a 25% increase in six months seems a bit difficult when you just got there. It will probably take a couple of months to even know what to do.

And a lot depends on what kind of resources you have. If you already have a lot of traffic coming to the site, without knowing anything else, I'd see if I could do some multivariate testing on the landing pages and the conversion path to see if I could increase the conversions of the people already coming. That might results in the gains you need and you can use Google Website Optimizer for free, so it fits into any budget if you know how to use it. (If you don't, you might need to hire a consultant who does.) If you don't have any metrics numbers for your site, you'd need to implement Google Analytics /> [...]

Inactive Twitter Usernames Scheduled For Recycling
Share |

If you're not happy with your Twitter username - or if you are, but don't love Twitter and haven't logged in for a while - listen up.  The usernames attached to inactive accounts may soon be made available for the taking.

Twitter LogoIn fact, the release of idle usernames is almost sure to occur.  The cutoff regarding inactivity has probably been set, too - Martin Bryant found a policy referring to the automatic removal of accounts after six months.

The most important detail - when the big release will take place - is just a little fuzzy.  Bryant wrote, "We reached out to Twitter for comment . . . and a spokesperson for the company told me that the company plans to release all inactive usernames and deleted usernames in the future but doesn't have a date set yet."

So make preparations for the event as best you can, whether that means signing into a few accounts you've let collect dust or setting up a sophisticated email alert system for when a username becomes free.

Something of a land rush is practically guaranteed to occur, and insofar as that'll represent (and generate) more interest in Twitter, the company's decision to make this move is looking pretty smart.

Google Removes Questionable Apps from Android Market
Share |

Yesterday a questionable report from SMobile Systems was released talking about Android security and how a fifth of Android apps pose security risks. The methodology behind this report has pretty much been ridiculed throughout the Blogosphere, though quite a few publications covered it. CNET even went so far as to retract the report.

Google's Jay Nancarrow told WebProNews, "This report falsely suggests that Android users don't have control over which apps access their data. Not only must each Android app gets users' permission to access sensitive information, but developers must also go through billing background checks to confirm their real identities, and we will disable any apps that are found to be malicious."

Even still, today Android has taken the initiative to have a couple of (intentionally) questionable apps removed from the Android Market. Android Security Lead Rich Cannings writes:

Android NewsEvery now and then, we remove applications from Android Market due to violations of our Android Market Terms of Service or Content Policy. In cases where users may have installed a malicious application that poses a threat, we’ve also developed technologies and processes to remotely remove an installed application from devices. If an application is removed in this way, users will receive a notification on their phone.

Recently, we became aware of two free applicat/> [...]
